Crowdcube founder Darren Westlake joins Birchal to supercharge Australian equity crowdfunding
Birchal, Australia’s leading equity crowdfunding platform, has announced the appointment of two industry heavyweights to its leadership team. Darren Westlake, the founder and former CEO of Crowdcube, joins Birchal as a Strategic Advisor, while Rod Bristow, former CEO of Investible, has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director.
Westlake, a pioneer in the global equity crowdfunding industry, successfully led Crowdcube to raise over ยฃ1 billion for more than 1,300 startups, including high-profile companies like Brewdog, Revolut, and Monzo. Bristow, a seasoned leader with over three decades of experience in venture capital and financial services, played a pivotal role in scaling Investible into one of Asia-Pacific’s most active early-stage investment firms.
โThese appointments reflect our ambition to lead Australiaโs equity crowdfunding industry to its full potential,โ said Matt Vitale, CEO of Birchal. โDarrenโs groundbreaking work with Crowdcube in the UK and Rodโs leadership in building investor ecosystems bring invaluable and complementary skills to our team. Their expertise will help us scale equity crowdfunding in Australia, creating new opportunities for founders and everyday investors alike.โ
Westlake expressed his enthusiasm for the Australian market, stating, โThe UK has shown how transformative equity crowdfunding can be, and I believe Australia is on the cusp of its own boom. Birchal has already laid the foundations as the market leader, and Iโm excited to help the team take it to the next level, leveraging lessons from the UK to accelerate the growth of this industry in Australia.โ
Bristow added,โBirchal is uniquely positioned to create meaningful connections between Australian founders and investors. Iโm passionate about building ecosystems that drive innovation, and Iโm thrilled to support Birchal in its mission to empower everyday Australians to invest in visionary businesses.โ
Since its inception, Birchal has raised over $218 million through more than 300 successful offers, connecting innovative businesses with over 79,000 active investors. But taking inspiration from the UK, which raised nearly ยฃ1 billion in 2021 and accounts for approximately 15% of the broader venture capital ecosystem annually, per capita trends suggest Australiaโs market could grow by up to 10 times. The addition of Westlake and Bristow reinforces Birchalโs commitment to leading this growth and shaping the future of equity crowdfunding in Australia.
With the addition of Westlake and Bristow, Birchal is poised to lead this growth and shape the future of equity crowdfunding in Australia.
